The Night Circus

Book by Erin Morgenstern -- I loved about 87% of this book. The description from the back:

"The Circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Reves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to both, this is a game in which only once can be left standing. Amidst the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone from the performers to the patron hanging in the balance."

I really loved all the characters involved in the circus, each one more charming and mysterious than the next. I couldn't put the book down…until the love part started! I mean, I found the love affair sort of distracting, actually - they characters around Celia and Marco are so neat and absorbing that the fact that Celia and Marco are supposed to be in loved was sort of a "who cares" type thing for me. Also, per usual, I got a little lost when it came to the magic part, trying to understand the magic. Its like the mental block I have on time travel books - I have a hard time keeping up with time travel books.

We don't really have a rating system here, but I highly recommend the book!

  1. I also liked this book! I got it as a book on CD from the library and listened on the way to the beach.
