"Life of Pi" Yann Martel. Technically a "fantasy adventure" - but I would classify it as "triumph of spirit". I realize this is now in movie theatres directed by Ang Lee - though I've not seen it - so you probably know what it's about. I'll add this: the story is captivating, exciting and engaging and a spiritual allegory that is transcendant. I think it should be required reading for 8 - 9th graders.
I have a book I want to put in, but I keep not doing it....sort of like me not putting stamps on the Christmas cards sitting on my living room floor.
